Snowfall records have been set all across the nation over the past 6 weeks. Deadly tornadoes have swept the South and the headlines extend around the world to floods in Australia, Brazil and Sri Lanka. While you can’t blame one specific thing for all the crazy weather lately, there are a couple of large-scale weather patterns that could be contributing to all the headlines. Equatorial Pacific ocean waters are much colder than normal. This La Nina pattern, as it’s called, alters weather patterns. The North Atlantic Oscillation also affects atmospheric circulation on a huge scale as air pressure fluctuates across the area. Tony Barnston, lead forecaster at Columbia University’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society, believes La Nina and the North Atlantic Oscillation are likely responsible for the weather patterns we’re seeing….
